Frequently Asked Questions

Henry answers the most common questions about the iPad for Architects courses

  • Based on my personal experience using iPads since 2017 and having tried numerous models, I have the following recommendations.

Any iPad compatible with the 1st or 2nd generation Apple Pencil will suffice for my courses. However, various other factors warrant consideration, such as speed, size, internal storage, Lidar, and budget.

Regarding speed, all 2024 iPad models are sufficiently fast for everyday drawing tasks with Procreate and Morpholio Trace. If feasible, opt for a model equipped with an Apple silicon chip (M1 or M2) for future-proofing.

In terms of storage, a capacity exceeding 128GB is essential. Using my iPad solely for professional purposes, my 128GB model remains only half full. Given the prevalence of cloud storage, investing in additional onboard storage may not be cost-effective. However, investing in iCloud for iPad backup is highly recommended, especially in the event of losing your iPad.

What about size? A 10.9" screen should suffice for most users. However, if you're heavily involved in illustration and rely on your iPad extensively for drawing, I'd suggest opting for the 12.9" model. The larger screen provides more comfortable drawing space. Regarding the iPad mini, I personally wouldn't recommend it for drawing productivity due to its smaller size.

For those on a budget, consider purchasing used or refurbished models from 1 to 2 generations prior, often available at significant discounts on the Apple Refurbished site or eBay. For instance, I still draw on a 4th Generation 12.9” iPad Pro from 2020, which adequately meets my drawing needs and can be bought for between $500 and $600 USD in 2024.

Wondering whether an iPad Pro is necessary? If you plan to utilize the Lidar camera (exclusive to Pro models) for 3D scanning, then yes. This feature is integral for residential architects and interior designers, and numerous applications have been developed around it. However, if Lidar functionality isn't a requirement, opt for a non-Pro iPad to save money. Personally, if faced with a fixed budget, I'd lean towards purchasing a used iPad Pro.

These suggestions reflect my personal opinions, so take them with a grain of salt!

  • While my course examples are focused on the architecture and interior design industries, the techniques and processes are applicable to additional industry segments, including landscape architecture.

I've had contractors, homeowners, and specialty vendors take it too!

  • My master class specifically focuses on teaching a design workflow using the iPad and Procreate. While some information may help improve your drawing skills, the majority of the course is centered around technical features and workflow methods rather than improving existing drawing skills.

I won't sugarcoat it - my course won't magically make you into a better sketcher overnight. But it can take away some of that stress and worry tied up with hand drawing.

Many students have told me that getting the hang of the digital process fires them up to keep practicing their drawing. Remember, it's all about the journey and getting better bit by bit.

  • My Master Class is specifically designed for the iPad. However, I am constantly exploring new possibilities and consider creating a class focused on non-Apple devices in the future. While many of the workflow principles are transferable, certain features are unique to Procreate and Morpholio Trace.
